The other day we took a look at the ArcticLine Software-developed application Folder Marker Free, a free application that allows you to easily change the color of a folder, or change the icon of a folder (mark folders by priority, by degree of work complete and by the type of information contained in a folder). If you wanted to turn a folder red for example, you could easily do so in one of two ways:

1. From the application’s interface, browse for the folder you want, select the color red, then click Apply.
2. From the right click context menu in Windows Explorer. Just right click a folder -> go to Mark Folder -> Colors -> select the color red.

We now switch focus onto Folder Marker Home, the premium version of Folder Marker for home users. There are in total 3 Folder versions:
- Folder Marker Free, which doesn’t cost a thing, but did not work on Windows 7 during our test. Worked fine on XP though.
- Folder Marker Home, which is meant for home users and offers support for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7. This version does everything that Folder Marker Free does, and a few extra bits. It comes with a wider selection of colors, a better selection of icons, lets you customize the Mark Folder menu, lets you add an unlimited number of icons to the User Icons tab, lets you apply a selected icon to all subfolders, lets you make customized folders portable/distributable, and lets you mark folders by work status.
- Folder Marker Pro, which is meant to be used at the office, in a corporate environment.

The bottom line is that Folder Marker Home is just as easy to use as Folder Market Free. It comes with a wider selection of colors, more icons, and a few other bells and whistles, including Windows 7 support or the option to apply a selected icon to all subfolders inside a particular folder. It is a very useful application that will help you color code and better organize your folders.

Before you go get Folder Marker Home and put it to the test, take a look at the following technical bits and pieces:

Download – the download weighs in at some 5MB.
Installation – installing the application is a straightforward process that goes along smoothly. Just follow the instructions presented by the setup wizard and you will be done in no time at all. It must be said that Folder Marker Pro provides support for Windows 98, Me, NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista and Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit editions).
Limitations - Folder Marker Pro is free to try, which means you can use the application free of charge for a trial period of 30 days.

Pros

  • Very easy to use
  • Large selection of colors
  • Nice selection of icons
  • Extensive language support
  • Automatically checks for updates

Cons

  • Free to try (30-day trial)
